Acquisition of Sherman County and Howard County Bank

On February 13, 2009, the Nebraska Department of Banking closed the Sherman County Bank and its branches. It was immediately turned over to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as Receiver. The FDIC had taken bids on the deposits only of the bank, and Heritage Group was the successful bidder. In a whirlwind weekend, the FDIC and Heritage Bank management stepped in Saturday morning to get the bank ready to reopen the following Tuesday morning following a scheduled President’s Day holiday. Thanks to the hard work of the employees of the former Sherman County Bank and its branches, as well as many from Heritage Bank, the Loup City, St. Paul, Dannebrog and Farwell offices reopened on schedule with a “business as usual” philosophy. Heritage Bank promptly set about reviewing all of the loans for possible acquisition as well.

Heritage Group is very pleased to have expanded it’s trade area north into Sherman, Howard and surrounding counties. Having served customers in the area for many years, Sherman and Howard counties weren’t entirely new to Heritage. Dating back in 1972 the Lew Welch family has enjoyed many a weekend at their Sherman Dam cabin, participating in activities at the Sherman County Yacht Club and St. Josaphat’s Church. Two daughters even married Sherman County residents (Susie to Archie Mrkvicka in 1974 and Vicki to Mike Palu in 1983)! We’re pleased with the quality of the employees and customers we’ve gained, and look forward to bringing additional financial solutions to our new markets.
